How do I know if I am eligible for SEAP?

A:To be eligible for the Self-Employment Assistance Program (SEAP), you must:

  • Qualify for regular unemployment benefits.

  • Enroll in a training program that the Employment Security Department's commissioner approves.

  • Be identified as likely to run out of benefits or be eligible for Commissioner-Approved Training (CAT).

Types of Approved Training Programs Found on the ESD Website are:

  • Entrepreneurial training

  • Business counseling

  • Technical assistance

Requirements to engage in activities relating to setting up a business and becoming self-employed.

A:Approval can take 1-3 weeks. You'll want to check your ESD account homepage every Wednesday to see if you have received a determination letter. 

Q: What if I already have a SEAP approval letter?
What if I already have a SEAP approval letter?

A: If you have already been given a SEAP approval letter, you only need to fill out the registration form by clicking on this link. You will receive a pre-filled SEAP provider form that you can forward for processing. The SEAP provider form is necessary to let the ESD SEAP unit know which provider you selected and give the program details.

Q: What if I want to start the course without a SEAP letter?

A: You can start any approved provider course whenever you'd like; however, be aware that if you submit the SEAP provider form and it is determined by the SEAP department that you are not approved for the SEAP program, you may continue the program but will also and still be required to perform the weekly job searches.

Q: How long are the training sessions?

A: This one-week intensive instructor-led program is geared toward individuals who are serious about becoming business owners. You must be willing to dedicate one week to 9-10 hours of training. The goal is to get your business up and running, gain new customers and clients, generate revenue, and celebrate your success within the time frame.

  1.  One week of instructor-led intensive online and interactive training. 

  2. Twelve months of unlimited business coaching, mentoring, and technical support.

  3.  Three (3) required SEAP program components & additional value-added such as:

    1. Entrepreneur business training (launch, maintain and grow your business)

      1. Assess your business readiness and create your business plan.​

      2. Learn SMART Objectives, proper planning and organizing techniques, and more.

      3. Learn the importance of your business name, how to register your business and what documents you need to create to ensure your business complies with the law.

      4. Learn how to perform market research and analysis, access funding during each stage of your business, gain government contracts, and more.

    2. Expert business coaching/mentoring.

      1. Receive assistance tailored to your specific business needs.

      2. Receive samples, examples, and assessments of any documents you need to run your business.

      3. Have your documents reviewed for accuracy and efficiency. 

      4. Receive tools and techniques for planning efficiency, policies, and procedures.

      5. Receive solutions to any problems you come across. 

    3. Business technical support.

      1. Receive demonstrations on how to perform all required technical skills.​

      2. Get help with registering, filing, and requesting resources.

      3. Test your website by having it reviewed by a creator, and have your website checked for improvement or grammatical errors.

A:You will make your first tuition payment at least 2-3 days before the start of class so that you can receive your student materials and be prepared for class.

A:If you are unable to complete the course due to a family or medical emergency, a refund will be provided to you.
